The Unexpected Role

Aria had never thought of herself as a performer. She loved writing stories and reading quietly in the library, not standing on a stage in front of people. So when her English teacher announced that their class would perform scenes from a play for the school’s spring showcase, Aria immediately planned to ask for a backstage job.

But things didn’t go as expected. When the teacher passed out scripts, she said, 'Everyone will read for a part first. We’ll decide roles after.' Aria tried to stay calm as she read a few lines aloud, her voice soft and unsure. She was certain the teacher would give her something simple—or nothing at all.

Instead, the next day, her name was next to the lead role. Aria stared at the cast list in disbelief. 'There must be a mistake,' she whispered to herself. She considered asking to switch, but something stopped her. Maybe, just maybe, she could try.

Rehearsals were awkward at first. Aria stumbled over lines and struggled to project her voice. But her classmates encouraged her, and the teacher gave her helpful feedback. Over time, she began to understand her character and speak with more confidence. She even started enjoying it.

The night of the performance arrived faster than she expected. As she waited backstage, her hands trembled and her heart raced. But when the curtain rose, something clicked. Aria remembered her lines, her movements, her timing. She could feel the audience listening. She wasn’t just pretending anymore—she was acting.

When the final scene ended, the crowd clapped loudly. Aria smiled, surprised at how proud she felt. She had done something she never thought she could. It wasn’t about being perfect. It was about being brave enough to begin.

Later, a classmate said, 'You should try out for drama club next year!' Aria laughed, but deep down, she was already thinking about it.
